Over 1,500 years ago in Japan, when paper was still rare and expensive, Buddhist monks wrote sutras on thin slices of wood. That tradition eventually faded as paper became widely available, but the craft of shaving wood into ultra-thin sheets survived in Nagano Prefecture.
